Carlton L. Benson

Consul, Economic/Consular Officer

Carlton L. Benson began his assignment at the United States Consulate General in Sapporo in July of 2012. His duties include management of the economic and consular sections.

Mr. Benson joined the United States Foreign Service in 2006. His first posting was at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, where he served as a consular and management officer. He then served in the consular section at the American Institute in Taiwan, in Taipei, before beginning his present assignment in Japan. Prior to joining the State Department in 2006, Mr. Benson taught history for ten years in Tacoma, Washington.

Mr. Benson grew up in South Dakota, Missouri, and Louisiana. He then received a bachelor’s degree in history from Colorado College (1983) and a Ph.D. in history from the University of California at Berkeley (1996). He enjoys hiking, tennis, skiing, and reading. He also enjoys spending time with his family, and is accompanied in Sapporo by his wife, Elzbieta, his daughter, Zoe, and his son, Tom.
